A great source for detailed information about travel; dining; shopping; special events and local attractions  is the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau.

A port-a-crib and high chair are provided.   Home equipment rental companies can provide  additional baby items plus any sports and/or beach equipment you wish rent and not to bring with you.  Things you may want to bring include beach and bath towels; paper products; laundry and dish soap; a cooler;  and cooking spices.  Two supermarkets are close by.

Travel to the Outer Banks by vehicle is easy.  Depending from which direction you come from, you may want to look at a map to determine the best route to take.  Maps can be found on the Southern Shores Realty website. The distance to the Outer Banks from Norfolk, Virginia is 90 miles; from Wilmington, North Carolina is 250 miles; and New York City is 430 miles.  If you plan on off-road access or beach driving, each town has specific rules with some even requiring a permit.

The closet major airport to the Outer Banks is located in Norfolk, Virginia.     Scheduled flights are available from major airlines like US Airways and American along with regional carriers.  For more information, please see the Norfolk Airport web site.
